Paddling and other water sports Andes, NY

What could be cooler than being on the water while being in the mountains! Andes and the surrounding area offers so much to those who love the water.

If you are a paddler or a small craft sailor, the Pepacton Reservoir might be just what you’re looking for.  The boating season on the reservoir runs from Memorial Day Weekend to Columbus Day, and kayaks and small, hand launched sailboats may enjoy this beautiful body of water after being steam cleaned.  Rentals are available.  READ MORE…..

Above the Pepacton Reservoir,  you can paddle the slow moving East Branch into or out of Lake Wawaka in Halcottsville for a quiet scenic tour.  If you’ve always wanted to try Stand Up Paddleboards, check out Susan’s Pleasant Pheasant Farm in Halcottsville – they offer kayak and SUP rentals.

Below the Reservoir’s dam, the East Branch is a more steady flowing river with occasional white water.  Water releases from the reservoir keep this river flowing steady even during dry summer months. Release water is very cold, which helps the healthy population of wild trout, but can make for painful swimming or wading in bare skin, at least in the upper stretches. A classic 5-mile float trip is from Rt. 206/30 bridge just above Downsville to the bridge in Shinhopple. Canoe/kayak rental available in Downsville.
