We’re still going strong 30 years later!
Meet the Owner: John Gregg, with a background in importing ethnic crafts and clothing, and a special interest in textiles, decided to sell his business, Serai Imports, and move from New York City to the Catskills. He had also sold antiques, worked for a textile auction house and designed and produced a landmark exhibit at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. called The People of Pakistan in the 1970s after working for the Ford Foundation in Pakistan. He has lived in Germany and France, taught in China for a year in the early 1980s, and exported from Central America, Mexico and Africa as well as India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
In the early years of running the store, John would also set up at weekly markets and annual fairs. In the late ‘90s, with the popularity of the store well established among second home owners, tourists and local people, and the commitment of his life partner to assisting with the buying and managing, he gave up the off-site markets. We’re still going strong 30 years later!
Meet the Manager: Judy Garrison, a long-time appreciator of handcrafted objects and ethnic clothing and jewelry, left her career as a real estate broker in Delaware County to pair up with John Gregg at Paisley’s. She collaborates in the buying, displaying and pricing of the merchandise and especially enjoys interacting with the public. Judy and John live above the store, and think Andes is a wonderful place to live. Judy is a co-editor of the Andes Gazette, a trustee of the Andes Library, and a member of the Andes Business Committee (ABC), which produces community events and promotes tourism businesses in the village.
